thinking about how tiktoker caitlin reilly has deconstructed, criticized, and parodied every aspect of upperclass white womanhood in the span of like 6 months
Can you please not bash on third party voters? Green party voters could have voted for Democrat nominees. It's not like green policy positions are hard to figure out! And there is absolute urgency to enact Green party positions. If a Democrat party nominee didn't get their votes, it's *the Democrats fault.* Democrat campaigns need to run campaigns that show support to their progressive allies through policies, not knee jerk reactions and shaming.
So first of all, it’s “Democratic”, not “Democrat”. “Democrat” is framing pushed by right-wing authoritarians who hope to create the impression that Democrats are not “democratic”. It’s a deliberate slur, and a dogwhistle to other right wing authoritarians.
I don’t know if you’re using that phrasing deliberately, or if you just don’t know. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, and respond to the substance of your comment.
I don’t disagree with you that Green Party positions, particularly as they address Climate Change, are vital. That’s why I work to elect candidates who believe in and are working to fight Climate Change. Where I am a realist is in American electoral politics, where I’ve lived my entire life and voted for 30 years. I know that Greens will NEVER be elected to the presidency in this country. Same for the execrable Libertarians. That’s the reality of the American electoral system.
At this point, and in any general election, really, the choice is very clearly between two people. One of them will be president, and that’s how it is. You may not like it, but you have a choice to make: are you going to be responsible and vote for the candidate who is *closest* to your positions? Or are you going to have a tantrum and support the candidate who we *know* will fight to undo everything you care about, just so you can feel smug and superior? I mean, grow the fuck up. Voting isn’t dating. Voting is taking the bus that gets you closest to your destination.
This election is the most consequential in my lifetime, and likely the most consequential election in American history. If Trump and the Republicans can cheat and steal this election, it is the end of American Democracy.
I respect and admire your commitment to climate change policy. I promise you that Biden/Harris will be more concerned about climate change policy than Trump/Pence/Exxon will be. If you’re going to throw a tantrum and refuse to vote for Biden and Democrats because they aren’t perfect enough for you, you are giving a giant fuck you to the planet, the climate, and vulnerable people all over the country.
I get that you want to change the party and move us to the Left. I want to do that, too. Electing young, progressive, passionate people like AOC is going to do that far more effectively than voting for someone who gives you the fan fiction you crave, without any chance of actually holding office.
We moved Biden to the Left because we supported and worked with Bernie and Senator Warren, not by threatening to hold our breaths until he took our threats to vote for someone who he’s never heard of and doesn’t care about seriously.
Anyone who identifies as progressive and is still supporting and planning to vote for anyone other than Biden is someone I don’t take seriously, or respect at all. The future of our country and planet is at stake, and at this point the choice is Biden, or Trump. Period. Full stop. You may not like it, which is absolutely your fundamental right, but that doesn’t change the facts or reality of the situation.
Vote Biden/Harris like your life depends on it, because it does.
i don’t think people get what these fires mean for California.
the fight against climate change is not “for the future” or “coming up”
no. it is now. for california, for me, for the 37 fucking million of us who live here, it is now. it is now. it is fucking now. there is smoke blanketing my entire city. the other day there was ASH FALLING FROM THE SKY. there are people who are living with red, terrifying smoke, right outside their front doors. i can’t open a window because it all smells like a fucking fire. the sky is entirely grey, because it’s all fucking smoke. my entire fucking STATE is affected by this shit. my STATE.
by the way, california? our population is 71% of England’s. an entire country.
and yes, there are issues other than climate change that have caused this shit, of course. but I’ve grown up through two droughts. I’ve watched the fountains in my town get shut down, I’ve watched them grow dusty and old. I’ve fixed my sprinklers to account for the new water restrictions. I’ve grown up knowing each winter was colder, each summer hotter. I’ve grown up seeing this shit.
every year, we come to fire season, and i hope and watch and desperately wish that it’ll be okay. that thousands of people won’t lose their homes this year. that i won’t have to walk home with a red sun blazing over me and smoke so thick i can’t stop coughing. that I’ll be able to step outside and not smell it. that people won’t lose their towns, their belongings, their livelihoods. every damn year.
my entire state is kindling. my friends outside of cali reach out to me about the fires, telling me they hope I’ll be safe. but i can’t go outside without inhaling lungfuls of smoke. i can’t do anything but watch as hundreds of thousands of acres burn.
2.5 million acres have burned this year. million. 2.5 fucking million acres. 20x what burned last year.
my state is on fire. my city is covered in smoke. a one year old boy DIED because of these fires, and who knows how many will join him by the time this is over.
so yes, please, donate. but i am tired as shit of people pretending that wildfires in california should be normal, that this is okay, that this is just “something that happens” no. no. vote for politicians who support renewable energy. vote for politicians who care about climate change. because, in the grand scheme of things, what we need is restrictions and laws and regulations. one person installing solar panels isn’t going to do shit.
those bottom photos are san francisco. my state is burning.
you can donate to help here. but this isn’t something that’ll go away. it’s going to get worse and worse, unless we fucking do something.
tags from @astrum-cipher. this is a huge fucking devastating problem.
I woke up this morning and could see the smoke before I even opened my blinds, just form the yellow quality of the light peeking in under the door. I’m from Oregon. I grew up with a color pallet of grey and green and blue, of rainy winters and forests that are supposed to stay lush through the summer. With this smoke, it’s dark like it is under the blanket of clouds in the winter, but this brings no rain, just ash falling from the sky. I don’t want to open the blinds because the world outside is orange, not green. I don’t want to watch the world I love burn. This is Not Normal.
yall didnt include the follow up which is possibly even worse
this is one of the most brutal ratios I’ve ever seen
LMAO THAT DUDE WON A NOBEL PRIZE SOMEHOW
economists will be like “yeah the single biggest terrorist attack ever to happen on american soil sucked and all but look how cheap airfare is now”
No foresight, no hindsight…
Honestly I’ve noticed a disturbing trend of people forgetting what 9/11 was like and the impact afterward. Or Zoomers getting it wrong but it’s probably not their fault, maybe they weren’t taught the correct history in school but… the internet is right. there.
Poland has the same problem. Trade schools became ‘shameful’ and fell out of favor. Now, good luck finding a good electrician.
So I wanna provide some clarity. The issue isn’t just “no one’s promoting trade schools” it’s also no one was/is hiring.
My sister learned a few trades in high school and was telling me how a professional basically told them that the people in those jobs stay in those jobs for decades, but they’re getting older so now’s a good time to enter the field.
So basically, the reason trade schools stopped being promoted was because those jobs were already filled. And because those jobs were filled it was tough for any young person to get into them so of course, people stopped going to trade schools. But now, a bunch of older workers are gonna retire, but there aren’t enough people to replace them so if you’re young and academia isn’t for you, now is a great time to go to a trade school.
also, another reason trade schools aren’t being promoted right now is because of the incident with ITT Tech. basically, ITT Tech was extremely aggressive in recruiting students for training in electronics and other technical careers. the problem there, like walkintalkintrainwreck says, is that there weren’t that many openings for jobs at the time because people stayed in engineering positions for a long time. so ITT Tech and others like it were basically taking in a more students that they couldn’t possibly hope to get employed by the time they graduated.
it took a few years for this to be fully investigated and in 2016, the federal government decided that ITT Tech could not accept federal funding for students and the school went under. a lot of people got burned by ITT Tech and trade schools like that, which led to the decline in popularity of trade schools as a whole.
my mom still owes student loans from when she went to a trade school to learn how to work on electronics back in the mid-2000s. thankfully, the loan is a lot less than a traditional college, but it’s next to impossible for her to find a job that utilizes the training she went through because 1) the information they taught in the mid-2000s is largely outdated now and 2) it’s been so long since she took those classes, she can’t remember most of the information anyway.
I bring this up not to discourage people from attending trade school (my own electronics training came from the US Navy’s specialized trade school), but because there are still predatory trade schools out there. Institute of Technology, which is one of the trade schools in California’s Central Valley that cropped up at the peak of the mid-2000s trade school craze, is still operating. I have no idea if their practices are any better than ITT Tech’s or what’s happened with them over the past 10+ years, but I’d still be wary, y’know?
obviously, there needs to be a government-level crackdown on predatory for-profit schools (don’t expect it from DeVos), but please remember to do your research before applying. here’s the guideline from the FTC on choosing a trade school. also, if you’re unsure, check to see if the trade school is covered by the Montgomery GI Bill or has a Veteran’s Resource Center. the VA, for all its flaws, has a strict requirement for paying out education benefits and finding out if a trade school meets those requirements is, in my opinion, a good way to check if the school is legit.
I’m in my 40′s, the decline in trade schooling started way before the ITT Tech scandal. That was one of the nails in the coffin.
I’ve been in finance for almost 18 years, experiencing mad burnout and am seriously considering going back to school to learn a trade.
how the hell are u gonna be in California where weve been getting dangerous high temperatures and its been super dry and we literally just had several BIG ASS fires bcs of the lightning and youre gonna think explosives is a great idea for your little fucking cis pride parade jesus fucking christ
Just so everyone knows this is a new fire caused by a gender reveal party and isn’t to be confused with the gender reveal party fire started earlier this year or the one from 2017
so just in case anyone ISNT aware of how fuckoff huge the fire is now. the smoke is now covering all of cali and a very large portion of nevada (the most densly populated areas no less), and just from population data alone that also 40 FUCKING MILLION people in danger of respiratory issues.
and that doesnt account for tourists, which is currently around 1 million monthly in vegas alone. Here’s the predicted coverage from this morning of sept 7th, 2020
the yellow is pretty average levels, but the orange is unhealthy for anyone with sensitivities, and red is unhealthy for anyone.
so let me state this again. 40 fucking million (40,000,000) people, in danger of asthma attacks, developing asthma, other respiratory issues, and this doesnt account for the fact that many of them are children with still developing lungs, all for what?
a fucking colored smoke bomb.
dont come at me with bullshit when people say that gender reveals are harmless fun or whatever, im tired of shit like this. i tired of 2020, im tired of anti maskers, im tired of people needlessly endangering others for a fun little poof of color, im tired of capitalism, and mostly? im tired of fucking dumbasses
(PS, THE SUNLIGHT WAS FUCKING ORANGE TODAY IT LOOKED LIKE SILENT HILL OUT THERE, THIS SHIT AINT FUCKIN COOL)
like, i’m pretty sure tiktok has existed for longer than vine did at this point but i’m yet to actually see an “iconic” tiktok. like people always caption like “this tiktok is ICONIC” but i’ve never seen one stay in the public consciousness for any longer than the 2 minutes it appears on my timeline. i never see people quote tiktoks or like, act them out with their friends or anything, not a single tiktok i’ve seen has had any actual staying power
meanwhile i can just say like “ROAD work ahead?” and i would bet a good chunk of you have just read that in the guy’s voice. i still see people tag things like “i wish i was jared, 19″. one night at the bar where i work we started an impromptu dance party purely by saying “hi, i’m renata bliss, and i’ll be your freestyle dance teacher”
i guess brevity really is the soul of wit
everyone calling me a boomer for this take has confirmed for me that people literally don’t know what boomer means
as far as i can tell these are the “iconic” TikToks-
suddenly remembered this poem as i was making breakfast this morning & frantically googled “poem remembered to buy eggs?????????” & somehow managed to find it & it utterly knocked the wind out of me just as much as when i first read it
